The Curse of Strahd

Session 4: The Monster in the Basement

As told by Helios Winston

  • After the incident with Utztec, the chanting has picked up pace.
  • We turn and head down the other hallway.
  • In a room with a table, a creature with a giant beak appears and attacks.
  • The creature takes out Tadg with one strike and takes Utztec to the brink of death. 
  • Helios stabilizes Tadg and Tadg proceeds to run back down the hallway, toward the staircase to run away from the fight. 
  • The creature knocks out Utztec. Helios heals him up and then Helios runs away, down the hallway.
  • The group, on its heels and on the run, catches a break as the creature catches itself on a beam and knocks itself out. Utztec seizes the opportunity and kills it.
  • We go back to the large room with all the beds and take a long rest. (retcon to Level up to 2nd level)
  • We complete the long rest but tadg seems stressed.
  • We discover more roo9ms with more stone slab doors for crypts.
    • Rose, Thorn, Elizabeth, and Gustan all have their name carved on each a respective door.
  • Backtracking  back to where we were attacked, we headed down the hallways to get attacked by four ghouls which are the remnants of adventurers who have died down here. (We leveled up here but retconned that we leveled when we took our long rest)
  • It is a very hard fight as everyone keeps getting paralyzed and stuck in tight spacing.
  • We continue through the tunnels, the voices are louder and now comprehensive, “He is Ancient. He is the Land.”
  • Adventuring further down, we find a room with alcoves with a bunch of strange items.
  • We find a flooded room with a large dais in the middle. We back track.
  • We find a prison area. Utztec discovers a skeleton with a ring on it and a secret door.
  • Helios takes the gold wedding ring and places it in the jewelry box that he found.
  • The group head through the secret door and it leads them back to the flooded room with the dais.
  • A giant blob of gore and bodies appears and combat begins. Helios gets stress as the giant creature moves towards them.
  • The adventurers defeat the blob and have to escape quickly as the house seems to begin to devour itself. Arms are coming out from the ground and walls, trying to grab the adventurers as the house is crumbling around them.
  • After a few close calls, the group does make it out just in time. 
  • As the group makes it out, they here clapping and look ahead to the fog where a figure stands.
